Ted Zipfel is a name that is synonymous with football in the community here in Thetford, so as a relative "newbie" to the town (and a keen footballer when my legs / physique allowed, which was many, many years ago), I was absolutely delighted to be asked to support a true Thetfordian's club in Thetford Rovers FC.
Ted has coached thousands of youngsters both on the pitch and off the pitch - teaching them, not just the beautiful game, but also valuable life lessons along the way. In fact, he was recognised at the TARAs (Thetford Awards Recognising Achievement) just last year for this and received his award from Simon Milton, a former Ipswich Town player who'd been coached in his early years by Ted.
Thetford Rovers have initiated a foundation in Ted's honour called the Ted Zipfel Foundation whereby, through crowdfunding, they hope to raise £500 per year to donate to good causes in the town. Now I've not lived in 'town' long (just 9 years) but the Zipfel name is one that I do know, true Thetfordian and proud. Ted, in particular, has given so much and I (as a relative outsider) recognise this - it's amazing that people 60 years his junior feel honoured to play under 'his name', after all Ted IS Thetford Rovers.
For more information about the Ted Zipfel foundation please feel free to contact us. In the interim, here's a short video with myself and Colin Woods of Thetford Rovers FC, which should explain all.
